Under general manager Les Snead, the Los Angeles Rams haven’t been afraid to be bold in their roster construction. Snead’s tenure as one of the longest-lasting GMs in the NFL has been marked by major trades up and down in the draft and for players. Just in the past year alone, Snead made two major trades that have put the Rams in the driver’s seat as Super Bowl favorites next season.

So it’s no surprise to learn that they would be interested in a policy that would allow them to get even more creative in making trades happen. On Wednesday, the NFL announced that there were only two proposal changes that will be considered by owners at the league meetings later this month.

One of those was submitted by the Cleveland Browns, who proposed allowing trades to include picks over a five-year span. Current rules allow teams to trade draft picks up to three years into the future. Rams’ team president Kevin Demoff took to Twitter to endorse the proposal.

Could Rams be signaling interest in new rule?

“Nothing creates more interest in the NFL than trades. This is why Cleveland’s proposal to allow teams to trade picks up to 5 years out as opposed to 3 years out makes so much sense. More picks to trade = more trades = more interest & team building options”, Demoff said.

This would be a massive change to NFL policy, but Demoff has a point in terms of the flexibility it offers. Imagine what a team could pull off with a Paul George-esque trade to kickstart a rebuild or reset. The Rams especially seem like a team ready to pull off that type of move if this gets approved, given Snead’s proclivity for the big trade.

What could they cook up with the option to trade picks over five years instead of three? Given Snead’s job security, he could come up with some dastardly deals in the future.
