Throughout the offseason, the Los Angeles Rams battled drama surrounding quarterback Matthew Stafford. The team battled rumors about them selecting a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, Stafford’s contract situation dragged all the way to training camp, and to make matters worse, his health dominated conversations until he came back with roughly three weeks left in camp.

All of this drama marred the outlook of the Rams, with fans and analysts balancing every positive take with “Well it won’t matter if Stafford is out”. This kept expectations down on a roster ready to compete for a Super Bowl. The team has built a talented roster from top to bottom, and just needed Stafford to drive the car.

In his first ever action since all the drama, Stafford did more than just drive the car. He turned out to be the whole engine the offense needed to pull out a statement 14-9 victory over the Houston Texans.

Matthew Stafford Goes Back In Time with Unreal Play against Texans

Going up against a ferocious Texans’ defense, the Rams needed Stafford to play at a high level if they wanted to move the ball. Their offensive line had some clear mismatches against the Texans’ pass rush, and Stafford had to get the ball out quick.

However, Stafford never seemed phased by Houston’s pass rush all game. He was composed and played well in the pocket throughout the game, making several high quality throws throughout. Whenever the Rams needed a big play, Stafford delivered.

Stafford turned his flawless outing against Houston into being PFF’s highest-graded quarterback of Week 1, leading the NFL with five big-time throws and had zero turnover-worthy plays.

Stafford seemed conscientious of his back and durability at 37 years old. He frequently dirted passes or threw balls away if he felt pressure or knew the concept was toast, a complete 180 from his usual penchant to try and make plays happen.

If Stafford continues this high level of play, the trajectory of the Rams’ season is completely flipped. Where this team felt like they were destined to maybe cap out around a divisional spot, Stafford’s renaissance in Week 1 has drastically altered that mindset. If he can do that against Houston’s defense, there aren’t many out there that can limit him.

The Rams have an all-important matchup against the Eagles in Week 3. In many ways, that feels like a game that could set the tone for the rest of the Rams’ season. If Stafford is like he was in Week 1, however, they won’t have much to worry about.
