The biggest question about the Miami Dolphins‘ edge defender situation lies with former first-round draft choice Chop Robinson.

But Robinson isn’t the only question in the room. A pressing question elsewhere is if Joshua Uche is going to have the kind of breakout year as a starter that he’s always teased to be capable of. After six NFL seasons, we have yet to see him in a full-time role. But the production as a pass rusher early in Uche’s career has certainly always warranted consideration. It’s been the run defending questions that have lingered. Miami’s edge room as a whole has the same questions this offseason. But a new revelation about Joshua Uche may change his outlook for the season ahead.

Miami Dolphins pass rusher Joshua Uche apparently may be a better option to play on early downs than we thought

Pull up Pro Football Reference or Uche’s draft profile from 2020 with the New England Patriots and he’s listed at 226 pounds. According to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald, Uche told the South Florida media he is currently tipping the scales at 255 pounds. That is, uh, QUITE the difference. And if it is a new development for Uche in recent months, it could help him be ready for more of an early down role with the Miami Dolphins.

At his best, Uche has been a twitchy, bendy pass rusher with juice on the edge. He’s yet to surpass 400 defensive snaps in a season. That has been, in part, because of some of the questions about his ability to play the point of attack.

This could potentially change his outlook playing on the line of scrimmage. Or, perhaps it changes nothing and Uche simply hasn’t had his weight updated in the online databases for years. We’ll find out soon enough, as Uche will have a prime opportunity this summer to claim a starting job in Miami. If he feels like a different player, we’ll probably have a good clue as to where the truth lies.
