A veteran wide receiver tied to the Dolphins this offseason is headed elsewhere — and Miami was right to pass on a deal

A wide receiver rumored to be on the market has, indeed, been traded. The Miami Dolphins were right to let this opportunity pass them by, though.

One of the potential avenues to an upgrade at wide receiver is now closed for the Miami Dolphins.

New general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan‘s old team, the Green Bay Packers, has reportedly been shopping veteran wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks for weeks. And, thanks to Sullivan’s ties to the Packers, many wondered if Miami would be the kind of team that pursues the pass catcher amid the March departure of WR Jaylen Waddle. Wicks has been traded — to the Philadelphia Eagles. Miami was right to not make the move based on the cost.

Wicks has been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 5th-round pick and a future 6th-round pick. The cost of trade compensation is handsome. Certainly higher than a team like the Miami Dolphins should have an appetite for based on their extensive needs and cap crunch in 2026.

Yet the trade compensation is only half of the equation for the Wicks deal.

Wicks also collects a one-year contract extension valued at $12.5 million from the Eagles. That cost is added on to the 2026 season, which is the final year of Wicks’ rookie contract. That’s quite a hefty amount of coin. Wicks is a good player, but he’s posted less than 750 receiving yards in the last two seasons. Combined.

It ends up being a double-whammy of investment from Philadelphia to bring Wicks into their ranks. And both elements don’t add up for the Miami Dolphins — both the pick compensation and the cash. Miami is a team that is reeling in the cash spending, so stocking an eight figure extension into 2027 would have felt counter to much of their efforts this offseason.

In all, Miami will need to shift their focus to the 2026 NFL Draft for help at wide receiver. Perhaps a veteran addition will arise elsewhere. But for now, Miami should continue their draft prep confident that they made the right choice not executing this deal.
