The juice isn’t worth the squeeze for the Miami Dolphins as a former first-round pick comes available at a position of need
The Miami Dolphins certainly have a need in the defensive backfield. But the newest player available would be a bad fit beyond the gridiron.
The Miami Dolphins certainly have their fair share of unquestioned answers at the cornerback position. The team has a first-round draft selection in Chris Johnson, plus a whole bunch of young talent competing for playing time opposite him in 2026.
There just so happens to be a former first-round draft choice that just became available. One that some could say is a worthwhile opportunity for the Miami Dolphins to explore. You won’t find me among them, though. Former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold cleared waivers this past week and is available to sign — but he comes with some pretty significant off-the-field overhead right now. Arnold was released by the Lions after being hit with multiple felony charges tied to a kidnapping and armed robbery incident.
Some new developments indicate as many as four teams have shown interest in signing Arnold amid the outstanding legal matters. The Miami Dolphins were not among them — nor should they be.
The Miami Dolphins aren’t among the teams listed as interested in CB Terrion Arnold — nor should they be
I’m not here to judge Terrion Arnold on the allegations and charges that have been laid out against him by the legal system. That’s what the due process of the court is for. But what I do know is quite simply this:
The Terrion Arnold situation will be a non-football related storyline. It will absolutely be a talking point for any team who brings him into their ranks. And it will stay that way until the full due process has played out to judge his conduct for better or for worse. That’s a fact. And with that being the case? It profiles as exactly the kind of distraction that the Miami Dolphins would be well served to avoid.
The Dolphins are trying to build up their football team from the ground level in 2026. Having players on the roster needing to comment on Arnold and his situation would be a distraction. Having Arnold’s ongoing legal proceedings be something that the local media market report on would be a distraction. The Dolphins had their fill of off-field distractions across the past few years off the field. Sitting situations like this one out, regardless of the final legal outcome, allows the team to keep the main thing the main thing. And that’s the right way to go about things, especially as the Miami Dolphins try to get this thing rolling.
