The Miami Dolphins must have felt that former NFL quarterback and advisor Troy Aikman did in his efforts in the team’s general manager search. When the news broke that Aikman was going to be holding serve in Miami’s inner circle for their general manager hire, it raised some eyebrows. But the Dolphins’ process was efficient, concise, and the team ultimately ended up landing one of the most respected personnel men in the industry to claim the job, Green Bay’s Jon-Eric Sullivan.

Aikman, according to some insiders like ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, was impressive throughout. Darlington reported how sources inside the Dolphins’ building felt that Aikman “was incredibly involved, incredibly thoughtful and completely committed to the Dolphins’ GM search” yesterday. And now he’ll have a chance to offer more value to the Dolphins organization this month — he’s staying on for the coaching search, per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Troy Aikman to stay on Dolphins’ hiring search committee for head coach efforts

Miami still has much work to do in the weeks ahead. The hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan at general manager gives the team the cornerstone they were looking for in talent assessment and player personnel. But it’s been reported that the Dolphins are going to have each of the three heads of their new front office structure report to ownership — the cap guru (Brandon Shore), the general manager (Jon-Eric Sullivan), and the head coach (to be determined).

The head coach position is still very much a power player in how the Dolphins are going to operate. And, accordingly, the chemistry with the other heads of Miami’s football operation is essential. Organizational alignment is paramount for teams that are building from scratch. That’s where the Dolphins are at now — and that means the input of someone who has seen a build from scratch lead to championship as a player in Dallas still has a lot of value.

The Dolphins, officially, think so too. Interviews are expected to start next week with Sullivan, Aikman, and the rest of the Dolphins’ leadership group diving into a robust group of candidates.
