Another coaching staff change has come to light for the Miami Dolphins.

The past two days have been a busy flurry of action, with the Dolphins agreeing to terms with new special teams coordinator Chris Tabor and promoting offensive assistant Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator under new head coach Jeff Hafley.

The Dolphins are fortunate to be in the hunt for an assistant at this stage, as there are many vacancies across the league that will be filled with a third of the league in the midst of head coaching changes this offseason. Miami’s next assistant signing is here, and it makes three wide receivers coaches in three years for Jaylen Waddle and company.

Dolphins are reportedly adding respected WR coach Tyke Tolbert to their offensive staff

Tolbert comes with a strong reputation. He hasn’t advanced beyond the wide receiver coach title, with only one of his jobs in the last 20+ years assigning him more responsibility within the offensive staff hierarchy. That came in Chicago, where he was the passing game coordinator for 2022 and 2023.

Tolbert has worked with some excellent wide receivers during his time in the league. He helped rookie Anquan Boldin to 101 receptions and 1,377 yards in Arizona in 2003. He had Eric Moulds and Lee Evans in Buffalo. Steve Smith Sr. in Carolina. Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and Wes Welker in Denver. Odell Beckham Jr. in New York.

Tyke Tolbert’s NFL coaching career

  • Arizona Cardinals: 2003
  • Buffalo Bills: 2004-2009
  • Carolina Panthers: 2010
  • Denver Broncos: 2011-2017 (Won Super Bowl 50)
  • New York Giants: 2018-2021
  • Chicago Bears: 2022-2023 (Also passing game coordinator)
  • Tennessee Titans: 2024-2025
  • Miami Dolphins: 2026

His last two stops before Miami were a bit of a different story. The passing game in Chicago was pretty much an afterthought as the Bears tried to develop QB Justin Fields, although WR D.J. Moore did post 96 receptions for 1,364 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2023.

Tennessee, the past two seasons under Brian Callahan, has been the equivalent of a wilderness retreat for offense. Tennessee has ranked 27th and 30th in points. Only one pass catcher in the two seasons logged more than 560 receiving yards in a campaign. And Tolbert had his hands full in 2025 — as Tennessee went full-on youth movement with rookie pass catchers Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike serving as the team’s two leading receivers.

He’ll presumably have more to work with in Miami, so long as the Dolphins decide to hang on to Waddle after some trade rumors this past season at the deadline. That decision is in the hands of new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. But even with Waddle in tow, the Dolphins’ wide receiver room figures to have plenty of youth moving forward. Tolbert will be charged with forging them as starting caliber players if needed.
