The Minnesota Vikings have seen multiple coaching changes over the course of the last six weeks. Nine assistant coaches have found their way to new opportunities, and those individuals needed to be replaced.

We’ve known about the additions of defensive run game coordinator Ryan Nielsen, defensive backs coach/defensive passing game coordinator Gerald Alexander, assistant head coach Frank Smith, and assistant offensive line coach Derek Warehime, but there were more that just got announced.

Minnesota Vikings announce multiple coaching changes

On Tuesday, the Vikings announced multiple changes to their coaching staff, including three new additions and multiple roles changing.

  • Kyle Caskey: Offensive quality control (new)
  • Chili Davis: Assistant special teams (new)
  • Will Johnson: Defensive assistant (new)
  • Chenzo Funary: Assistant defensive backs (promotion)
  • Dalmin Gibson: Assistant linebackers (promotion)
  • Josh McCown: Offensive passing game coordinator/Quarterbacks (promotion)
  • Derron Montgomery: Assistant wide receivers (promotion)
  • Chris O’Hara: Assistant offensive coordinator (promotion)
  • Mike Siravo: Inside linebackers/Senior defensive assistant (promotion)
  • Jordan Traylor: Assistant quarterbacks/Passing game specialist (promotion)
  • Patrick Hill: Assistant defensive line (change)

It’s a lot of movement on the coaching staff, but it’s not unprecedented to have that kind of movement. There are some interesting changes on the staff. Hill goes back to the defensive line after spending this past season with the outside linebackers.

The biggest one here is the promotion of McCown. He gets the title of passing game coordinator after his quarterback room was one of, if not the, worst in the NFL. That earns a promotion? It doesn’t make a ton of sense in the grand scheme of things. Was he doing more outside of working with the quarterbacks behind the scenes that resulted in the promotion? Even so, it’s an odd one.

O’Connell found some good coaches to add to his staff. Now, they have to figure out how to succeed on Sundays.
