Right now, the Vikings do have a CB1 in the building with Byron Murphy Jr., whom they gave a hefty extension after two really good years with the franchise. Outside of him, there are some intriguing pieces, but major question marks throughout the rest of the room. It's a big reason why the Vikings are continuously attached to the likes of Jaire Alexander and Jalen Ramsey.
Brian Flores reiterates confidence in Isaiah Rodgers
Why didn't the Vikings do more to fortify the cornerback room? It was evident that they liked the room they had based on multiple media appearances throughout the offseason.
The Vikings beat writers hadn't gotten to speak with defensive coordinator Brian Flores all offseason, and they took the opportunity to ask about the cornerback position, specifically presumed starter Isaiah Rodgers and it didn't take him long to gush about his ability.
"He's been on my radar since he was at UMass, a fast playmaker. I think he's one of these kind of late-round guys who found his way in the league in the kicking game. And got in some games and made some plays. I've always thought he was a good player and was ascending. And the opportunity presented itself that we could maybe acquire him. I was all in, and I'm happy we got him. He's been a great addition. He's got a great kind of football IQ and acumen. That's something that we stressed, really, throughout the group, at all levels, secondary, second level, and obviously D line. And I think it's just a great addition we talk about, you know, bringing guys in who as far as building a synergy within the group. How does this guy mesh with Murph (Byron Murphy Jr.) and Harry (Harrison Smith) and Telly (Josh Metellus), and he's just come in and done a great job from that standpoint."
Rodgers is the latest in the line of low-cost, high-upside players the Vikings have liked to bring in under general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. This method landed the Vikings the likes of Andrew Van Ginkel and Blake Cashman, with the former getting a contract extension.
If Rodgers is the next one that hits, it will solidify the secondary in ways that will get people to stop asking for the Vikings to sign or trade for a high priced cornerback. He plays the way that Flores likes his cornerbacks to play, and that matters a lot.
Having consistency on the outside is going to be massive for the Vikings, and they believe Rodgers gives them that.
