The Minnesota Vikings saw their special 2024 season come to an end on Monday night with a brutal 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Not only was it a brutal loss on the field that ended the season, but it was also one that ended the tenure of multiple Vikings.
One of those potential losses going into the offseason is legendary safety Harrison Smith. He signed a modified contract going into the season that potentially signaled what his plans were going to be with his future and he commented on that after the game.
Harrison Smith talks future with the Vikings
After the game, Smith spoke with KFAN's Ben Leber about the loss, who made note that Hitman made sure to talk to everybody from players, coaches, training staff, etc.
"There's a lot that goes into this," said Smith. "It's not strictly players, and I just want to give my thanks to everybody that makes it go. Obviously, wish we could've had a better result here today, but that's tough to swallow right now. But it's been one of the most fun teams I've ever played on at any level, and there's a lot to be said about about this group, and I really wish I had a couple more weeks with them, to be honest."
It was a special season for the Vikings having won 14 games and the vibes were sky high for the majority of the season. Smith told Leber that he believed they had a chance to be special early on.
"I thought we had a chance pretty early. You never know till the lights come on, but it was pretty early. It was pretty early, and I wish we could have done a little more today. But guys were this group. This group enjoyed playing with each other and playing for each other."
The biggest question of them all remained: Is this the end of the line for Smith? He was a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and has been incredible for the Vikings throughout his career.
The contract restructure he signed in March signaled that a retirement was likely coming this offseason and it very likely could. Smith ended the interview with a nonchalant answer.
"I don't know. Probably chill out for a little bit," said Smith about possibly retiring this offseason. "I haven't wanted to think about it kind of selfishly, just live in the moment. And I'm kind of still in that moment, so it'll come when it comes."
Last year, Smith realized when he was doing construction that he should probably make a decision on his future. That is likely to come again this year, but Monday night could be the last time the Vikings end up playing with Hitman on the back end.
