Unsurprisingly, the New England Patriots want to bring in a veteran quarterback. Especially considering the latest report that Mac Jones' time with the team has likely ended.

There are a lot of solid names out there, but there is one player that the Patriots have started looking into that should excite fans.

According to the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, Baker Mayfield "has supporters from within the Patriots’ organization," but he added that "there are some impediments to signing him."

Many of the new faces on the Patriots staff and in the front office have experience working with Mayfield, especially offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney who worked with him while with the Cleveland Browns.

However, another top free agent on the market is Kirk Cousins, but Kyed added that the Patriots have "not yet shown interest."

"The Vikings free agent is coming off of a torn Achilles and is likely to sign for even more money than Mayfield," he wrote.

Considering the injury and the price tag, Mayfield would make so much more sense. However, it has been reported that the Buccaneers are interested in bringing him back.

But not enough to use the franchise tag on him. So he will hit the market.

And the Patriots could impress him with a nice offer. Especially considering how much money they have to spend.

Along with bringing in a veteran quarterback, the team is expected to use the No. 3 overall pick on a rookie quarterback. And they have reportedly met with USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, and Oregon’s Bo Nix at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Mayfield and one of these top rookie quarterbacks would be a dangerous duo for the Patriots.
