EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Thursday night's loss to the New York Jets is a game that the New England Patriots are going to want to put in the rearview mirror as fast as possible.
It was an ugly showing on all sides of the ball, including a very uncharacteristic performance by the defense. Specifically, star defensive end Keion White spoke with reporters in the locker room after the 24-3 loss, and provided a very honest and critical review of how he did.
"I think I played like sh**. I'm not going to lie to you," White said and was asked to provide more details on the areas he felt he struggled in.
"Everything. Missed tackles. I did that. Let the quarterback out of the pocket. I did that. Not putting my hands up at times, everything that you could do, I think I did tonight. I think I just need to improve everything."
Despite a rough night for White, he has still been the true star of the Patriots defense in terms of pass rush. The team has already lost Matthew Judon in a trade and Christian Barmore is sidelined indefinitely.
So when White was slow to get up and limped over to the sidelines, it was certainly a scary moment. But, when asked for an update after the game, he stated that it's just football.
"Shake it off. Walk it off," he said. "I'm walking. I don't have any broken bones."
The Patriots pulled off an impressive Week 1 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, and then narrowly lost to the Seattle Seahawks in an overtime thriller during Week 2.
But this time, the Jets managed to highlight and exploit every area of weakness. It was just an ugly game for the Patriots.
So improving is the main focus going forward.
"Yeah, and I expect that to be the mindset of everybody on the team. 1-and-2. That's unacceptable," White said. "Losing is not to be tolerated, so we just need to go to the drawing board and see what we've done over the last two games, because we have San Francisco (49ers) who's a really good team coming up."
By playing on Thursday night, the Patriots now have a mini-bye week, with 10 days to regroup and reset. So does that help, having this long break to prepare for San Francisco?
"No, that sh** is a** because I'm having a long weekend of losing. So now that's just longer where I have a bad taste in my mouth."
