Predicting the New England Patriots’ biggest moves in free agency: Splash plays at wide receiver and pass rusher kick off Super Bowl reset
Expect the New England Patriots to be highly aggressive in free agency to return to the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots are eager to wash out their brutal loss in Super Bowl LX with an aggressive approach in free agency and plenty of cap space to attack big moves to return to the Super Bowl. They have a pretty strong nest egg of over $43 million in cap space, and have plenty of holes to address.
I think the Patriots, much like last offseason, will be very active in free agency and will look to make several splash moves in order to build up another Super Bowl roster.
Patriots free agency predictions
Alec Pierce heads to Foxborough
All of the tea leaves seem to indicate that former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce will wind up as a Patriot, and there are some intriguing links between Pierce and the Patriots.
Pierce would give New England the big-play threat the offense desperately needs to open up their passing game with Drake Maye and take advantage of his elite talent. Pierce can be the top receiver for the Patriots’ right away.
The Patriots pull off a splash move to address pass rush
With K’Lavon Chaisson set to depart in free agency, the Patriots have a massive void opening up in their pass rush. It can’t be all Milton Williams, and the Patriots know that.
Whether it’s a trade for a player like Jonathan Greenard or a splash signing like Jaelan Phillips or Trey Hendrickson, I expect the Patriots to try and add a key cog to their defensive line to fix their pass rush next season.
Multiple offensive playmakers surround Drake Maye
Even if Alec Pierce joins, I don’t expect him to be the only move the Patriots make to surround Drake Maye with offensive talent. They should double-dip at wide receiver in my opinion, and their tight end, running back, and offensive line rooms all need to shore up their depth.
I suspect at least four new free agents will be joining the Patriots’ offense this offseason.
Patriots shore up defensive depth
Despite making the Super Bowl, the Patriots’ defense was an underrated unit for most of last season. However, the depth of the unit is fairly thin at arguably every position room, even if they return their established starters everywhere.
I suspect one of their earliest moves will be to fix their hole at safety with Jaylinn Hawkins’ impending free agent status, and then turn their attention to building their depth at linebacker, cornerback, and their defensive line, particularly at defensive tackle.
