New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is expected to be sidelined for the next month due to a sprained MCL he suffered during Tuesday’s practice, Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Kamara, fresh off signing in adjusted contract to stay with New Orleans for the 2026 season, is now in danger of missing the start of the season.
It’s yet another blow New Orleans is taking this week.
Alvin Kamara’s new injury compounds with Jordyn Tyson’s
The Saints are still reeling from losing rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson to injury. They will now have to operate without Kamara for some time as well.
That’s WR2 and RB2 down on back-to-back days. Not ideal.
Kamara, who did not play in last week’s preseason-opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, is coming off the least productive season of his career. He posted just 471 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on 131 attempts during the 2025 season while only appearing in 11 games. His receiving production dipped as well as he caught just 33 receptions for 186 yards.
The Saints signed Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, $48 million deal in free agency, paving the way for him taking over as the lead tailback. New Orleans still envisioned Kamara having a role, and now will have to adjust with the season beginning in just over three weeks.
Recalibrating the offense
Kamara missing the next month takes him out of the season-opener against the Detroit Lions. Tyson is likely missing the first handful of games of the season.
That means Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, and Audric Estime need to step up behind Etienne at RB. Trey Palmer and rookie WR Barion Brown each had productive games against the Jags on Saturday. They can continue getting opportunities with more targets up for grabs.
More importantly, the Saints need to escape this month without any more injuries that will impact the season.
