Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Jake Haener has landed an opportunity with another team this preseason.

Per NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, Haener is signing with the New York Giants.

Jake Haener a year removed from competing with the Saints

Haener was the Saints’ fourth-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft. New Orleans traded up 100 picks with the Jacksonville Jaguars to land him at the cost of its 2024 fourth-rounder. That pick became former LSU defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, who is now with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Haener only started one game for the Saints in 2024 and played in eight total games that season, but he had a chance to become the team’s long-term starter this time last year. That was officially erased when Spencer Ryler and Tyler Shough proved to be the better options leading up to the 2025 season.

Haener was waived and then signed back to the practice squad. He was elevated a handful of times throughout the year, but then officially released in January.

What has Haener been up to since?

The Kansas City Chiefs took a flyer on Haener back in February. There was a need for QB depth at the time when Patrick Mahomes was fresh off of ACL surgery. Haener stuck around in K.C. for the first part of the offseason program, and was then released in May. He had been out of a job since.

New York is making him its fourth QB behind starter Jaxson Dart, and backups Jameis Winston, and Brandon Allen. He is officially filling the Roth spot vacated by cornerback Sam Webb’s retirement.

It’s unlikely for Haener to see extended time in the preseason with three other QBs already well acclimated in the system. He could stick around on the practice squad, but the chances of Haener making a significant impact with his second team in four months are low.
