Keys to the game for Saints

More reps for Shough and Rattler

The quarterback competition rages on for New Orleans. Entering the first preseason game, I would have predicted that Rattler had an edge to win the job. After the first exhibition, I may actually lean towards the rookie. Shough looked composed, athletic, and his arm talent showed up against the Chargers. He made the major mistake of throwing a pick-six on third down, but that was one of his few clear errors. His touchdown pass to Mason Tipton was an impressive downfield shot.

Depth pass catchers need to find rhythm

Depth at wide receiver has been an issue for years now. Mason Tipton annually impresses some in the preseason, but you don’t need to rely on him as a third option at the position. I would expect Brandin Cooks to hold that role during the regular season, but it doesn’t feel like anyone on the roster currently can even put any pressure on the veteran.

Getting an impressive game from another wideout down the depth chart would be a nice step forward for Kellen Moore’s passing game.

Offensive line concerns

The Saints lost backup center Will Clapp to a potentially season-ending injury last weekend against Los Angeles. Now, that is a competition that revs up, and Torricelli Simpkins III could prove that he deserves a roster spot on the interior OL by the time preseason play finishes up. Kyle Hergel and Shane Lemieux could both get reps at center against the Jags as well.

New Orleans needs to find legitimate depth they trust, though. The OL’s performance against the Chargers was not impressive, particularly once rookie Kelvin Banks Jr. and other starters left the game.
