Saints part ways with RB Alvin Kamara in trade offer that opens the door for surprise draft pick in top ten
The New Orleans Saints may not have Alvin Kamara in the fold next season. Could a trade be on the horizon? This potential deal makes plenty of sense for both teams involved, and it may make Kamara happy as well.
Trades are always fun to consider during the NFL offseason. For the New Orleans Saints, they have never been shy about making a deal or two for depth reasons.
In a recent hypothetical trade piece from FOX Sports, former Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara was pinpointed as a trade chip for the Saints to trade away rather than trade for this year, though.
Potential trade offer sends Alvin Kamara to the AFC
FOX Sports’ Senior writer Ralph Vacchiano is the one who came up with these ideas, and he created a unique reunion for Kamara. In the scenario, he rejoins former Saints head coach Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos.
“Kamara is 31, coming off the worst season of his career, and coming back from knee and ankle injuries. He also doesn’t want to leave New Orleans. But a reunion with Sean Payton and a chance to chase another championship in what could be his final NFL season might be enough to convince him to change his mind.
The Broncos have J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey in the backfield, and Harvey is a decent receiver. But Kamara could give the offense an added passing threat, and he could thrive in a reduced role. Given his age and injuries, he also wouldn’t cost Denver more than a sixth- or seventh-round pick.” — Vacchiano
In the deal, the Saints received a 2026 7th-round pick (no. 246) and a 2027 7th-round pick in exchange for the veteran running back.
The possibility of drafting Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love
This sort of trade, if it occurred before the draft, would further create some drama with the eighth overall pick. Many have ruled out Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love for the Saints since they signed Travis Etienne Jr. in free agency.
If Kamara was no longer in the fold as a potential duo in the backfield, Love could still be in play for New Orleans. They have clearly had some interest in him throughout the process, and he was the most popular pick for them in mock drafts a month ago.
A Kamara trade could easily create a sort of domino effect in the top ten of the draft that affects both the Saints and many other teams picking around them, too.
