Latest developments in the Malik Nabers situation may force the Giants to consider an old friend at wide receiver

The Giants haven’t had great news when it comes to Malik Nabers and his injury, and it could force them to add another wide receiver with ties to his old team.

The New York Giants are beginning anew yet again. This time, however, things are supposed to be different. New head coach John Harbaugh is a proven winner in this league, and many of the core tenets for success are already in place.

Quarterback Jaxson Dart, two bookends at tackle, a dominant edge rushing group, and, of course, a true WR No. 1 on the perimeter with Malik Nabers. Only Nabers’ knee isn’t in the best spot, and it could make the Giants consider their options.

Malik Nabers’ knee continues to be an issue

The latest news comes from head coach John Harbaugh himself, who said, “It was not a simple knee surgery,” when asked about Nabers’ recovery. I’m not sure any knee surgery is simple, but to hear a head coach be that open and that pessimistic, well, that raises some questions.

For the Giants, the cupboard is still pretty bare behind Nabers, even with the likes of Darnell Mooney, newly acquired free agent Calvin Austin III, rookie Malachi Fields, and omnipresent Darius Slayton. So could that, coupled with the Nabers situation, spark the Giants to add a veteran? And one with familiarity in New York?

Malik Nabers Facts

  • Played for the LSU Tigers in college.
  • Was teammates with rival Commanders QB Jayden Daniels.
  • 1x Pro Bowler.

Giants linked to a veteran WR

“The New York Giants may not have Malik Nabers at the start of the regular season, as he recovers from a torn Achilles. While they’ve added the likes of Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, and third-round rookie Malachi Fields, they should look to add another veteran to help second-year QB Jaxson Dart.”

“The Giants have reportedly considered a reunion with Odell Beckham Jr., who also played under head coach John Harbaugh in Baltimore. If that doesn’t materialize, veterans like Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins should be on the proverbial table.” – Kristopher Knox, Bleacher Report

Final Word

Even before the news about Nabers, the Giants could have used some more weaponry on the perimeter. Amid the concerns and with some weapons like Diggs, Hopkins, and an old friend, OBJ, in the market, it could be mutually beneficial for New York to make a move.
