There’s a blindingly obvious major market NFL landing spot for Brendan Sorsby — if a team wants to take the risk

If the ex-Texas Tech QB is green lit into the NFL supplemental draft, he’s basically at the mercy of one particularly franchise.

The Texas Tech/Brendan Sorsby vs. NCAA/Big 12 tag team match appears to have finally ended. And that could be good news for one NFL team still looking for a long-term quarterback solution.

On Monday morning, the Big 12 filed suit in federal court against Texas Tech and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as a first step of enforcing its bylaws against the Red Raiders for sticking by Sorsby, whose gambling habits in college before arriving in Lubbock this offseason have become well documented. That evening, Sorsby and Texas Tech parted ways, with the former set to apply for entry into the NFL supplemental draft.

And if that application ends up getting approved, one team in particular is in a terrific spot to pounce if they so choose: the New York Jets.

Jets in prime position to potentially land QB Brendan Sorsby — if they want to take the risk

The NFL supplemental draft is a rare event, having last taken place in the 2023 offseason. Unlike the typical NFL Draft, where there is a set order over a number of rounds, the supplemental draft is a bid-based system. Priority is given in tiers to non-playoff teams with less than six wins, and then it goes to other non-playoff teams and then playoff teams. There is a weighted lottery within each tier to determine priority. Each participating team submits its highest bid (by round) as far as what pick they’re willing to part with. If they’re the winning bidder, they part with that pick in next year’s primary draft.

In the 2027 NFL Draft, the Jets lead all teams with three first round picks. No team wants to just throw away first round picks, and I’m not suggesting the Jets do here, but it puts them in a unique position to be aggressive if they REALLY like Sorsby and they want to make sure they get their guy.

That said, Sorsby is a hard player to invest heavily in at this point. He allegedly gambled on his own team while at Indiana. He has sought treatment for a gambling addiction. That’s a significant red flag for a team to spend a high draft pick on.

But players with the talent of Sorsby don’t grow on trees. The Jets addressed a lot of issues in the 2026 NFL Draft. They injected some juice into their pass rush with Texas Tech QB David Bailey and landed a potential steal in Indiana CB De’Angelo Ponds. They found two potential playmakers in Oregon TE Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana WR Omar Cooper, Jr.

And still, they need to find a long-term answer at the game’s most important position. Could they address that need this same offseason? If Sorsby ends up in play later this month, it’s completely up to them.
