Jets’ quarterback situation is about to become even more awkward if they take the next steps with Pro Bowl signal caller
The New York Jets have their starting quarterback via Geno Smith, but they are showing interest in a backup that could make things even more awkward than they need to be.
The New York Jets hit a bases loaded grandslam witrh their first four picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq, Omar Cooper Jr., and D’Angelo Ponds, all inside of the top-50, were fantastic picks and tremendous value out of the Jets.
But the Jets didn’t draft a quarterback until the fourth round, where they used the 110th pick to select Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik. Klubnik, alongside Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook, is viewed as a backup to Geno Smith, but the Jets are considering another.
Jets hosted Russell Wilson on Visit
If you haven’t kept up with Russell Wilson post the Seattle Seahawks, you have missed a lot, but nothing of real value. After a disastrous couple of seasons in Denver, the Broncos took the largest dead cap hit in NFL history at the time to say goodbye to Wilson, only for the Pittsburgh Steelers to sign him a few months later.
Wilson had the Steelers 10-3 and buzzing at one point, only to see the team utterly collapse after losing five straight, including a playoff beatdown against Baltimore. Ironically enough, the Steelers wanted Justin Fields back in 2025 over Wilson despite benching Fields, but as Jets fans know, he went to New York.
Well, so did Wilson, only he joined the Giants, started a few games, and then was benched for rookie Jaxson Dart. What makes the situation in New York awkward is that the roles would be reversed this go round.
Geno was once Wilson’s backup in Seattle, only getting his shot when the two sides decided to move on. Now, it’s clear that the Jets want him to be the starter, and Wilson to be the No.2
It’s the kind of move that, while weird on the surface level, is an indication of how life in the NFL goes at quarterback, and Wilson looks like he still wants to play.
