The Philadelphia Eagles continue to prep for the 2026 NFL Draft. As the selection days approach, it is always intriguing to hear the reports and quotes that come out surrounding prospects entering the league.

Steve Sarkisian praises safety Michael Taaffe

In a recent ESPN piece from Adam Rittenberg, some college football coaches pinpointed NFL Draft sleepers for this year. Texas Longhorns safety Michael Taaffe was mentioned. The experienced defensive back is widely expected to go early on day three, but he may be one of the best values in that range for any defensive prospect.

“His football IQ is elite,” coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He’s a guy who’s going to not only contribute on defense but on special teams, so there’s value for him there.”

Safety need is an under-the-radar one for Eagles

During this process, there has been a lot of talk regarding wide receiver, offensive tackle, and pass rusher for the Birds. Those are understandable concerns and legitimate needs for the roster during the draft.

Safety hasn’t been in the discussions quite as often, even though I think the starting roles at the position are potentially less set in stone right now. Andrew Mukuba is expected to lead the room, but he’s coming off a season-ending injury.

Marcus Epps and J.T. Gray, as veteran acquisitions, should not change the starting outlook on defense for a Super Bowl contender like Philadelphia. While Howie Roseman normally has not addressed positions of “lesser value” in the past, he did just take a linebacker in Jihaad Campbell a season ago

Taaffe could be a great add for the Eagles due to his lack of expensive draft capital cost and higher floor that could get him on the field early in his pro career. We will see if the Birds have him on their radar later this month.
