Cam Heyward is still pledging his allegiance to Mike Tomlin in recent comments about the changes among Steelers’ coaching staff
While Cam Heyward is excited for the future and has noticed a change in Pittsburgh, he’s not ready to compare Mike McCarthy to Mike Tomlin just yet. His latest comments show that there is still a lot of loyalty in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are about to embark on a new era for the first time in nearky two decades. While organized team activities and minicamps served as an appetizer, when the Steelers return from summer break in late July and begin training camp, the season will start for all intents and purposes, and it will be Mike McCarthy’s inaugural year in Pittsburgh.
There have already been some notable changes on the offensive side of the ball in Pittsburgh, and the way the team operates and functions in general. But if you ask Cam Heyward to spell them out for you, he’s not ready to go that far just yet.

Cam Heyward won’t name the biggest difference between Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin
“TBD, I don’t want to answer that,” said Heyward when asked the biggest difference between Tomlin and McCarthy. “I think there’s just a lot that we’re still absorbing. I think the biggest thing is just having more time with the newer coaches; they try to schedule it so they can have some more time. There are different communication things we want to accomplish, coaches want to accomplish, so just trying to communicate better and learn from them.”
Why Cam Heyward is playing the wait-and-see approach
I don’t think it’s surprising to see that Captain Cam, who has played his whole career up to this point with Tomlin, who walked off the field with Coach Tomlin after games, decide not to gloat about his new head coach.
Heyward and Tomlin were about as tight as a player and coach could be. There have been reports and stories about Tomlin having Heyward speak to the defensive line or defense in general during halftime. Tomlin empowered Heyward to be a leader, and that lives on through his final years in Pittsburgh. But it also doesn’t mean that Heyward won’t view McCarthy in a positive light going forward.
“Yeah. We used to park next to each other every day, so that’s been a little bit different,” added Heyward on missing Tomlin. “[Doesn’t] mean we can’t both succeed in our next chapter, and making sure we all have a chance to just grow from that.”
