CBS Sports thinks the Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the top value moves during the first wave of NFL free agency.
The national sports media outlet pointed out several great value moves that have been made this week and the Steelers' signing of quarterback Russell Wilson for $1.21 million was at the top of their list.
From CBS Sports: Is Wilson past his prime? The numbers and eye test suggest as much. But Pittsburgh is literally paying him less than what the Buffalo Bills are paying Mitch Trubisky to sit behind Josh Allen. At 35, with a pretty deep ball still in the arsenal, the ex-Seahawks star is built to operate the Steelers' old-school offense, leaning on the run and play-action. Odds are Pittsburgh will be back to square one in a year or two, but Wilson at least registers as an upgrade on Kenny Pickett. If he simply proves competent, keeping the club in the playoff mix a la Baker Mayfield with the Buccaneers, he'll have easily out-earned this trial-run deal.
This is a no-brainer. There's very little downside with signing Wilson and a whole lot of upside.
If Wilson turns out to be a disaster in Pittsburgh, the Steelers essentially flushed a million bucks down the drain — less than what a decent backup quarterback usually costs on the open market.
But if he returns to the form that we saw in 2020 when he threw 40 touchdown passes while leading the Seattle Seahawks' offense, then this deal could look like one of the best in NFL history.
There's at least a reasonable chance that the second scenario happens considering that Wilson was in a disastrous situation during his two seasons with the Denver Broncos. Nathaniel Hackett was a catastrophe as a head coach in 2022. And Sean Payton clearly was never going to be able to co-exist with Wilson last season.
Maybe a fresh start in Pittsburgh is all the potential Hall of Famer needs to experience a career resurgence.
