Former NFL quarterback has a wild take about Drew Allar’s future despite him just arriving to the Pittsburgh Steelers

Drew Allar has yet to take a meaningful snap for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but according to one former quarterback turned analyst, he may be gone sooner rather than later.

Drew Allar has been a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback for less than a month. He’s had a weekend of rookie minicamp, and two days worth of OTAs (as the fourth teamer by the way), and many are intrigued to see what Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy can mold him into, especially with Aaron Rodgers back for a final season.

Well, Chris Simms of Pro Football Talk and NBC Sports doesn’t seem to be one of those people.

Drew Allar Facts

  • Took Penn State to the CFP semifinal in 2024.
  • Was named Mr. Ohio for football in high school.
  • Grew up a Browns fan.

Chris Simms says Drew Allar may get cut by the Steelers before season starts

“I wouldn’t be shocked if it was the other way around,” Simms said when referring to Allar getting cut and Howard staying during an episode of Pro Football Talk. “For all the things you just said about Drew Allar. It’s raw. That’s why I couldn’t get behind the pick. I like the kid.

“He’s big. His arm is strong. But the throwing motion, the drops, the offense that he was in, it’s all bad…he could be so raw that they get through training camp and they go, they can’t make him the third either.”

Would the Steelers actually cut Drew Allar?

Most teams in the NFL place high value on third-round picks. Few teams in the NFL place as much value on draft picks in general as do the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh is more inclined to let a rookie deal expire and see the player walk than it is to cut said player.

So to think that the Steelers of all organizations would cut a third-rounder, who happens to be a quarterback and was hand-chosen by your new, offensive-minded head coach, well, that’s borderline asinine in my opinion.

If two players in that room are safe, it’s Aaron Rodgers and Drew Allar. The battle for the third and final spot, which will in all likelihood be for the backup role, has been, and will be, between Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. That’s the grouping to watch this summer. Allar will be sitting back, soaking it in, and getting ready to redshirt as he re-learns the quarterback position.

Because that’s been the plan all along.
