Steelers send a clear message to the rest of the league regarding their activity ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline
Safe to say that Omar Khan better keep his phone close over the next week.
Pittsburgh Steelers HC Tomlin took to the podium for his weekly presser on Tuesday at the UPMC Sports Complex, and he had a lot to say. He talked about the defense and changes (or lack thereof) effort, the will of his team, and where Pittsburgh goes from here following two embarrassing showings on defense in back-to-back weeks.
But it was the end of Tomlin’s presser that caught the attention of many. That’s because the NFL trade deadline is exactly a week away as of publish time. Come Nov. 4 at 4:00 pm ET, all trades are closed until 2026.
And according to Mike Tomlin, the Steelers are open for business.
Steelers to be active ahead of 2025 NFL trade deadline
“I think we’re always open for business, particularly as we get close to the trade deadline,” said Tomlin via the Pittsburgh Steelers YouTube channel. “We’re always buyers. We’re always trying to position ourselves to be the best that we can be this year. But that not only applies to the secondary that you asked about. I’m sure that applies to to all three phases of the game.”
The key portion of that statement from Coach Tomlin was “all three phases.” For most of the offseason and certainly through the first half of the season, the trade rumors have been about adding another WR.
And rightfully so when analyzing that the only consistent contributor in the Steelers WR room this season has been DK Metcalf. The bigger problem, however, might be the players on the defensive perimeter.
In the last two games, the Steelers have forced zero turnovers. That has exposed the defense, but especially the secondary, for what they are. The group can’t run, they can’t communicate, and they routinely look out of sorts. Forget the tackling part, as even the linebackers have struggled there.
Oh and the injury to DeShon Elliott is only going to make all of those issues worse.
So yeah, the Steelers, while they still have an AFC North lead, should absolutely be buyers at the trade deadline and at more positions than one. Two bad losses don’t define a season. Everything is still in front of the Steelers and they are in total control of their own destiny.
But that destiny isn’t going to be the one they envisioned when they set out at the start of the season unless they change something, and fast.
