Omar Khan is about to oversee his third draft as general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Through two, there have been a lot more hits than misses, and he's shown a willingness to be more aggressive in trading picks and players compared to former GM Kevin Colbert.
But according to Chris Canty of ESPN, he's not been good enough…
Steelers, Omar Khan blasted by Chris Canty
“It’s embarrassing. I don’t know what the path forward is for the Pittsburgh Steelers, for Mike Tomlin," said Canty on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike. "They clearly need to upgrade from what the quarterback situation has been, ’cause it has been a revolving door and that’s gotta stop at some point. But I just don’t understand why you’re waiting for Aaron Rodgers and you’re not formulating a plan to give you more stability long-term at the most critical position in the entire sport…
"..That just doesn’t make any sense. It’s poor planning. The front office has done you no favors, whether it’s Kevin Colbert, the previous general manager, or Omar Khan, the current general manager. They have been derelict in their duties in terms of managing the roster and having a functional succession plan from Ben Roethlisberger to a new era of Steelers football.”
It's a strong but compelling point from Canty and one that echoes the sentiments of many fans and supporters of the Black and Gold. Omar Khan is the new kid on the block, so it's a liite unfair to put the QB decision making on him, but right now he's being hung out to dry.
Holding up the entire free agency process in hope that the Minnsetota Vikings decline the wishes of Aaron Rodgers and he turns to the Pittsburgh Steelers is a risky proposition, and one that could be even more embarrassing than the Aiyuk saga from last offseason.
But Khan has nailed two draft's, brought the Steelers into the modern times in terms of free agency, and even made the trade of the offseason to give everyone that dynamic playmaker to pair with Pickens.
But what Canty said is true. None of it matters if they can't land, and more importantly win with a QB. Even if they do reel in Rodgers, what happens next? He's 42 years old and doesn't have many, if any seasons left at this point.
So until Khan finds the franchise's next signal caller, there will be a lot of questions about his tenure.
