Fantasy football expert sounds the alarm about 49ers’ Mike Evans, and he’ll have to buck a serious trend to prove him wrong
Evans has stayed productive, but one expert thinks time could catch up with San Francisco’s new star.
The San Francisco 49ers made one of the biggest splashes of the 2026 offseason when they landed long time Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans in free agency. The 49ers offered Evans a tantalizing option to secure a second Super Bowl title in the final stages of his career. Evans won Super Bowl LV catching passes from Tom Brady.
But how much of an impact will Evans produce, at least statistically? While Niners fans are excited about the prospects that Evans can bring to the Bay Area by joining forces with George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, one fantasy football expert has his concerns about Evans’ production taking a dip.
A panel of ESPN fantasy football expert listed their sleepers, busts, and breakouts, and Mike Clay listed Mike Evans as his bust candidate. Clay discussed Evans’ recent injury history, but then he raised concerns about him crossing the age 33 threshold before the start of the season.
ESPN fantasy football expert names 49ers’ Mike Evans as a bust candidate
“Over the past decade, Larry Fitzgerald and Julian Edelman are the only 33-plus-year-old wideouts to deliver top-25 fantasy campaigns, and they primarily worked in the slot and/or short range,” Clay wrote. “Evans has generally made his hay as a downfield, red-zone playmaker. He’ll benefit from Kyle Shanahan’s efficient offense, but Evans panning out as your WR2/3 is going to require some serious touchdown fortune.”
I think Clay’s worries about injuries are warranted. Evans, who was a pillar of consistency and durability during his first decade in Tampa Bay, has missed 12 games over the last two years with hamstring and collarbone injuries. Despite luck being a significant factor in injuries, the odds don’t feel all that high that he makes it through all 17 games.
But I think it might be premature to say that Father Time is calling on Evans as he crosses the 33-year old threshold. Sure, it’s certainly a fair trend to note that the production slows down as guys reach that mark.
However, Evans — when on the field last year — showed no signs of slowing and can still run by and leap over guys to get the football. I’ll believe he’s lost a gear when I see it.
We’ll find out soon enough, as the start of training camp is less than four weeks away.
