Former NFL coaching legend Monte Kiffin, the father of current Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, has died at age the age of 84.

Kiffin is credited with the creation of the "Tampa 2" defensive scheme, which played the primary role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning their first Super Bowl title in 2002.

He served as a coach at seven different college football programs and eight NFL teams over the course of nearly 60 years.

Those included stops in with Nebraska, Arkansas, NC State, Tennessee, USC, FAU, Ole Miss, the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Earlier during the year, Kiffin was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame through is Awards for Excellence program, which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the world of football.

"As his grandson Knox said, he's free of pain and smiling down on us from above," a social media statement from the university said. "Please keep the Kiffin family in your thoughts and prayers during this time."
