Bucs fans enjoying a late summer or fall afternoon with the radio on are used to hearing the smooth tones of Gene Deckerhoff calling the action for Tampa Bay.

The voice of the franchise narrated the greatest moments in franchise history, including victories in Super Bowls XXXVIII and LV. And who could ever forget great calls, like “run, Micheal, run!” when Micheal Spurlock ran back a kickoff for the franchise’s first-ever kick return for a touchdown against Atlanta in 2007?

However, all things come to an end, and Deckerhoff’s career in Tampa Bay ended last year with his retirement after 37 seasons. The shoes he left to fill are enormous. Who’s going to be the one willing to try?

Of course, general manager Jason Licht would look to the Pacific Northwest, more specifically the University of Washington — from where he’s drafted four players over the last five years — for Deckerhoff’s replacement. The Bucs announced that they’ve hired Washington Huskies play-by-play announcer Tony Castricone as the team’s new voice of the Bucs.

“To follow in the footsteps of somebody as great as Gene Deckerhoff, what he means to the franchise, he’s not just a broadcaster, he’s an institution,” Castricone said. “While I’m a different person and a different broadcaster, I’m going to come in with just the absolute most passion that I can pour into this job. It’ll be different. The heart on the sleeve will be beating just as intently.”

Castricone has more than two decades of experience as a broadcaster and comes to Tampa from Seattle after spending the last nine seasons as the Huskies’ play-by-play announcer for Washington football and men’s basketball. He called the Huskies’ run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in the 2023 season.

“Following a comprehensive nationwide search, we are thrilled to welcome Tony to the Buccaneers,” Buccaneers Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford said in a press release. “Tony distinguished himself through his professionalism, preparation, passion and ability to connect with audiences. He understands the responsibility that comes with this role and possesses the talent and authenticity to build meaningful relationships with Buccaneers fans for years to come.”

It won’t be easy to replace a living legend, but it sounds like Castricone will bring his own style and brand of excitement on the microphone to Tampa Bay.
