The Tennessee Titans announced their gameday roster transactions on Saturday afternoon, and amongst them is WR Mason Kinsey.

Kinsey is being elevated to the 53-man roster full-time, not just as a gameday elevation that reverts back to the practice squad. It’s his 2nd time being elevated before a game this season, but this time, expect him to remain on the active roster for perhaps the rest of the year.

Kinsey is being brought up primarily to handle punt return duties, a position which has been held by rookie 6th round pick Jha’Quan Jackson until now.

Jackson is finally being benched. The Titans coaching staff isn’t giving up on him long term, but they’re out of patience with his inability to hold onto the ball.

In both Week 12 at Houston and Week 13 at Washington, Jackson put the ball on the ground on returns and gave the Titan’s opponents the ball in their territory. He’s up to 5 fumbles on the season, though not all of them have been lost.

Not only is Jackson being benched, but he’s expected to be inactive in Week 14 as well.

“Yeah, I mean, there's—I won't give away all my information for you, but there's—we're looking at some things to see if we can get that better.” Head Coach Brian Callahan told the media on Wednesday. “Obviously, the ball on the ground is too much and we got to get that fixed and secured. So, we're working through that process, yeah.”

Mason Kinsey has been the obvious in-house solution to this problem all along. Callahan said earlier this week that he was going to get a serious look.

“Yeah, Mason (Kinsey) is an option. Obviously, he's done it before. I've not seen—I mean, I've seen him doing training camp, but he's played in games, so yeah, he's certainly an option. And then we'll look at all of them.”

Kinsey has 13 career punt returns under his belt from 2022 and 2023, totaling 100 yards. That’s 7.7ypa with a career long of 21yds.

The Titans coaching staff is likely to make more shrewd personnel moves the rest of the regular season as certain individual efforts are deemed unacceptable. Don’t be surprised if Jackson isn’t the only player who meets this fate this week.

This roster churn will give new, younger players an opportunity to show what they’ve got. Best case, the team benefits from it. Worst case, the coaching staff at least acquits themselves for trying.
