The Texas Longhorns made national recruiting news for the wrong reasons early on July 4th, as they shockingly lost a huge recruiting battle to in-state rival Texas Tech. However, Steve Sarkisian immediately bounced back and won another elite talent just two hours later.
Felix Ojo, a top ten player in the country, surprisingly chose Texas Tech over both Texas and Ohio State signing a mega-deal allegedly worth up to more than $5 million dollars. That's a tough price tag to match for any one player.
The good news?Texas fans didn't have to stay too sad for long.
Texas Longhorns land elite four star offensive lineman John Turntine
The best recruiting programs in the nation always have a good backup plan, and that's exactly what the Longhorns had in place with star offensive lineman John Turntine on July 4th.
Turntine isn't just any backup plan. He's a top 40 overall recruit in the country who actually boasts a higher BMI and perhaps more impressive build than Felix Ojo has already. Turntine is a 6'4", 285-pound monster offensive lineman who can play a number of positions if Texas requires it.
Turntine committed to Texas just barely two hours after the Longhorns missed out on Ojo, choosing them over Michigan, Stanford, and most importantly Texas A&M.
Turntine had made it known throughout his recruitment that he was always leaning towards joining an in-state program, visiting Texas, SMU, and Texas A&M almost exclusively throughout the last two years.
Stanford and Michigan technically had a shot down the stretch, but this really came down to Texas or A&M. Luckily Steve Sarkisian closed this deal and beat out the Longhorns' bitter rival.
John Turntine fit with Texas Longhorns
Given his measurements, Turntine projects–to some national recruiting experts–as more of an interior offensive lineman. However, thanks to his quick footwork, power, and frame that still has room to fill out with more weight, Turntine could also play either offensive tackle spot long-term.
He played a ton of left tackle in high school so that may be the more natural fit, but Turntine's fit and early role likely depends on where Texas needs him. There's a good chance that the entire interior offensive line is gone after this upcoming season, so Turntine may begin his career at Texas playing one of the guard spots just out of necessity, but Longhorns fans can expect to see him tested in multiple roles given his versatility.
Huge win for Texas. And great timing given the less than ideal news losing the battle for Felix Ojo.
