Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart took the podium at SEC Media Days this week and wasted no time spotlighting the three players he brought to represent the program: linebacker C.J. Allen, quarterback Gunner Stockton, and cornerback Daylen Everette.

During his opening remarks, Smart explained why each earned the trip to Atlanta, and when it came to Stockton, the praise was clear. Smart highlighted his leadership, work ethic, and impact within the locker room.

But while he made it known how valuable Stockton is to the team, Smart stopped just short of naming him Georgia’s starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

"Gunner is a kid that leads from the front," Smart said. "Gunner is a winner. He comes from an athletic family background, his dad played at Georgia Southern, and he's the kind of kid you want at the front of the line, and he leads from the front. So I appreciate what Gunner does. He's going to be a big part of our program this year in leadership, and doing that with the offensive players. He's already begun to do that in the leadership groups that he runs right now."

Smart may not have named a starter, but it’s clear Stockton is leading the competition right now.

Stockton might only have one start under his belt heading into the 2025 season, but it wasn’t just any start; it came in the College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl. After Carson Beck was sidelined with an injury, Stockton was thrown into a high-stakes matchup against Notre Dame and held his own. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, with no picks.

Georgia ended up falling 23-10, but Stockton's performance turned some heads as he looked calm, confident, and in control. It was a solid glimpse of what he could bring as Georgia’s potential next QB1.
