In 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners were put in a position that will allow them to grow for the future, but a position that no one really wants to be put in.

There aren't many teams, if any, who went through as many injuries, and as brutal injuries, as the Sooners did last season. There was one point in the season when the Sooners were without their best five receivers. That gave young guys a chance to learn and get better with live game reps and experience. While it didn't translate to wins, it showed that the Sooners' depth with their young guys — first and second-year players– was good.

It showed they recruited well, as some of those players made some pretty big-time plays in big-time moments, like cornerback Eli Bowen, who may be the Sooners' best cornerback heading into his second season.

And, the Sooners may get some more production from another freshman cornerback.

Sooners freshman CB Courtland Guillory is putting Brent Venables on notice

He seems to be turning heads, but, of course, you never know if he will get an opportunity. Even if he doesn't, the Sooners have a guy at the position who hasn't even played a snap of college football, yet, he's garnering the respect of the people he needs it from most.

"On the defensive side of the ball, I would think a few names that you may or may not know," head coach Brent Venables said at SEC Media Days. "Courtland Guillory, a young man from Houston who showed up on campus… A corner that loves to compete. That's probably his best quality and trait… He's a dog. I love that about Courtland."

Guillory, a four-star CB from Texas, was a top 40 cornerback in the class and a top 53 player from his hometown state. And, he's showing he could be a better player than those 247 rankings.

The Sooners are in a decent position to shock a ton of people in 2025. They have one of the hardest schedules in the country, but they also did last year. And, somehow, with that schedule, and no offense, and all of their injuries, they managed to win six games.

With all of the additions they have made to both the staff and the roster, the Sooners can be a ten-win team. It won't be easy, but getting solid contributions from even their freshmen players would be a huge step toward becoming a more complete and deeper team.
