When NFL players are away from their teams before training camp, there’s always concern about potential off-field issues — and that became a reality for the Cleveland Browns over the weekend. Former Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins was arrested early Saturday morning in Florida.

According to Sergeant David Soika of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s Media Relations Unit, Judkins was taken into custody following a delayed battery report:

“On July 12th, at approximately 9 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Police Officers responded to the 1500 block of West Cypress Creek Road in reference to a delayed battery. Officers arrived on scene and spoke with the victim. During their preliminary investigation, it was determined that a battery had occurred. Officers made contact with the suspect and placed him into custody. He was transported to the Broward County Main Jail. The suspect has been identified as Quinshon Judkins, DOB 10/29/2003, and has been charged with Misdemeanor Battery (Domestic), FSS 784.03-1a1.”

Quinshon Judkins may have just gave Cleveland contract leverage

Judkins, who has yet to sign his rookie contract with the Browns, is one of several second-round picks still unsigned with training camp just days away.

Only two players selected in the second round have signed their rookie contracts so far. The Browns locked in one of them — linebacker Carson Schwesinger — who received a fully guaranteed four-year deal after having just about no choice but do so. The Houston Texans starter the trend with their second-round pick just one selection after the Browns took Schwesinger. Around the league, a widespread holdout among second-round picks is beginning to take shape, even as some training camps have already started.

Browns rookies are scheduled to report this week, but Judkins will not be permitted to participate unless he signs a contract. His recent legal trouble could now complicate those negotiations. Pushing for a fully guaranteed deal may be off the table after an arrest — even if the legal process is still unfolding — especially for a rookie who hasn’t stepped onto the practice field yet.

Judkins rushed for over 1,000 yards in three straight college seasons at Ole Miss and Ohio State and played a key role in the Buckeyes’ national championship run. But now, instead of making headlines for his play, he’s in the spotlight for the wrong reasons — just as camp is about to begin.
