When the Cleveland Browns made the move to trade for Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles, it was just the first of multiple moves at the quarterback position.

Cleveland was always going to add a veteran to the room to compete with Pickett for the job. The Browns were never going to hand the job to Pickett, as he isn’t an ideal bridge option.

The Browns bringing back a familiar face made a lot of sense and they’ve done just that. First reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns are signing QB Joe Flacco to a one-year deal for $4 million and the deal can be worth up to $13 million based on incentives.

Flacco started five games for the Browns in the 2023 regular season and went 4-1 during that time to propel them into the playoffs. Flacco ignited the passing game and threw for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The turnovers are something you take with Flacco, but he’s still a bridge-quality quarterback at 40 years old.

The former Baltimore Ravens quarterback spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts where he started six games. Flacco threw for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Browns' plan should be clear at No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft

After having a historically bad offense last season, the Browns have to jumpstart things. The No. 2 overall pick surely isn’t going to be spent on a quarterback at this point and probably wasn’t going to before signing Flacco. Cleveland still needs to add talent on that side of the ball and there is no better choice than adding the draft’s top wideout.

Drafting Colorado’s Travis Hunter would give the Browns an elite prospect that can be a game-changer on offense from Day 1. Hunter has the ability to play both sides of the ball but the Browns would at least start him on the offensive side of the football only.

Pairing Hunter with Jerry Jeudy would give Cleveland quite the duo at receiver and it would be a tough matchup for opponents. Again, with how bad the offense was last year, it should be the move.

Cleveland is still going to draft a quarterback to develop and they have to. But after signing Flacco, they at least have a starting QB option now that the fanbase should be somewhat comfortable with.
