The Cleveland Browns will have a unique start to their 2026 season that could prove challenging for one of the NFL’s youngest teams. Cleveland opens on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, then travels to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield in Week 2 before finally returning home to host the Carolina Panthers in Week 3.

Starting on the road in Florida presents a conditioning test for the Browns

Playing two road games in Florida early in the season is no small task for a team that practices in Northeast Ohio. Those September games are sweltering hot in Florida, and the Browns are going to have to make sure they’re in tip-top shape and ready to go. 

Cleveland has a favorable schedule compared to last year in terms of strength of schedule, but coach Todd Monken starting his first season as a head coach on the road for two games in Florida isn’t the most ideal situation.

Conditioning is a real concern for some teams more than others at the beginning of the season, and the Browns will need to be ready for the heat.

Todd Monken sees a blessing in the September Ohio heat

The Ohio weather has been favorable for the Browns this week because it’s been scorching hot. It’s felt like the dog days of August as September arrived, and Monken acknowledged the conditions on Wednesday.

“What a blessing yesterday was, being out there where the heat index, whatever the hell they call it, ‘feels like’, was in the 90s, and today will be the same way,” Monken stated. “Tried to tell everyone it is a blessing. It won’t feel like that today, but it will be when we play next week.”

Monken is sending a clear message to his team: the players might not love it right now, but they’ll be better off next week when hot weather is nothing new to them in a game environment where they’re trying to pick up a win.

The opener against the Jaguars will be all about quarterback Deshaun Watson’s first regular season start since 2024. The focus will center on whether he can get the ball to his young playmakers in wide receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, as well as what the running game looks like behind Cleveland’s new offensive line for running back Quinshon Judkins.

The Browns have the talent to compete, but the early schedule demands that this young roster handles adversity on the road before settling into the comforts of home. How Cleveland comes out of the first two weeks could be very telling for this team.
