Everyone loves a great college football story, especially when it comes to a unique player. The stories and pagentry of the sport are what separates college football from other sports, including the National Football League.
Last season, we saw the culmination of Travis Hunter's incredible ability to play both sides of the ball land him a Heisman Trophy. We haven't seen a player play this well on both sides of the football since Charles Woodson (who also won the Heisman) and Champ Bailey in 1997. Both players went in the top 10 of the ensuing NFL Draft
The world of college football might have the next guy in that mold at a school you wouldn't expect: the University of Minnesota.
Entering his sophomore season, safety Koi Perich has been a dynamo across multiple facets of the game. The Gophers have used him everywhere on the backend, but the one spot they have yet to do so is on offense, but that seems to be coming.
There have been rumors about Perich playing on both sides of the ball for a while now, and it looks to be coming to fruition. He made first-team All Big Ten with his five interceptions on defense as a true freshman. He also became the first freshman in the last 50 years to have 100 punt return yards, 100 kick return yards, and five interceptions in a single season.
Perich was a two-way player in high school, with his senior season being the best of the bunch with 27 touchdowns in five different ways:
- 16 rushing
- 5 defensive
- 4 return
- 1 passing
- 1 receiving
He played in the All-American Bowl before enrolling at Minnesota, where he won Most Valuable Player honors with an interception and a blocked punt. Giving Perich time on both sides of the ball will likely keep him happy and get the most out of an elite-level player, something the Gophers don't often have.
If you don't know the name Koi Perich yet, you will soon.
