Last month, Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins sent Cleveland Browns fans into a frenzy by supposedly appearing in the Cleveland area. Cousins was spotted at a Chipotle and replied to the post, and that was enough for fans to get the trade rumors going.
Browns GM Andrew Berry said that the Browns had no connection with Cousins being in Northeast Ohio so that shut down the rumors for the time being.
Cleveland still needs a starting-level quarterback and some folks think that ends up being Cousins, whenever he is dealt. After being pushed out for Michael Penix last season, Cousins likely wants no part of going to a team that drafts a quarterback early. What Cleveland does in the draft is going to tell their plans for the position in 2025 beyond Kenny Pickett.
Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot raises valid worry with the idea of Cleveland trading for Kirk Cousins
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com is a respected beat writer and plugged-in insider on the Browns beat. She recently made a good point regarding the idea of Cleveland adding Cousins.
"You can't rule anything out at this point, but I still think that that's a little bit of a longshot,” Cabot said. “You have to satisfy three different entities. You have to satisfy the Cleveland Browns, [and] you have to satisfy the Falcons, and you have to satisfy Kirk Cousins with a number of things that have to gel together and come together.”
Cousins has a no-trade clause, so he holds the leverage to where he eventually ends up. Cousins has a $40 million cap number in 2025 and the Browns are already paying Deshaun Watson a ton of money due to his $230 million guaranteed contract. Last season in his first year following the Achilles injury, Cousins was not his former self and threw for 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
A lot of pieces have to come together in all for the Browns to lane Cousins, who does have a past connection with Kevin Stefanski from their time with the Minnesota Vikings. It isn’t out of possibility that it will happen, but there is a lot to work through.
