FOXBOROUGH, Mass – How many first round draft picks can say they knocked their future head coach to the ground?
Well, new Patriots offensive tackle Will Campbell can.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that last Thursday while Mike Vrabel and the Patriots were holding a private workout with Campbell, the head coach decided to throw on a blocking pad. And in the end, Campbell made quite the impression, knocking him to the ground.
However, "Vrabel loved it and had a big smile on his face as he gathered himself and got up," Thamel added.
So, when he was speaking with reporters immediately after getting selected by the Patriots with the No. 4 overall pick, Campbell admitted that this did indeed happen.
"Yeah, I got him. I'm not going to lie," Campbell said. "I got him on the ground."
But there were no hard feelings.
"And then we had a great lunch afterwards," Campbell added.
Vrabel on the other hand was not too happy to have to admit this.
"They all knocked me around pretty good. I realized I'm close to 50, and if that tape ever gets out, people are going to have some problems, Vrabel said with a laugh.
But, during the workout Vrabel noticed one specific thing.
"When we went down there to work (Will Campbell) out, he showed up with one purpose and that was for us to pick him," Vrabel stated.
And that's because the Patriots was the team at the top of Campbell's list.
"This is where I wanted to be since the start," the tackle said. "Eliot Wolf came to my practice probably about Week 5 of the season, and I told him this is where I wanted to be."
Clearly he made the perfect impression.
