Heading into the 2024 college football season, former Notre Dame All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison was included in the vast majority of 2025 NFL first round mock drafts. Morrison was a stellar performer for the Fighting Irish during his three seasons, ending his career with 84 total tackles, nine interceptions, and 18 pass breakups. From a pure coverage perspective, there was a lot to like.

Injuries ruined Morrison’s final season in South Bend, including a shoulder surgery last offseason. His 2024 season was cut short after suffering a torn labrum in his hip that also required surgery. If the draft conversation just centered around his on-field performance, there isn’t a ton not to like about Morrison outside of wanting his play strength to take a step forward.

As we have found, however, there is a lot more to draft valuation than the eye in the sky. Medicals and character play a major role in the process, and sometimes even more than the former. From a character perspective, you won’t find a young man much higher thought of than Morrison. Unfortunately, those injury concerns have proved troubling for his prospects of getting selected high.

With the feedback we already knew about, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Morrison not selected in the first round. Most anticipate he will hear his name called sometime early in the second round on Friday, but that isn’t a guarantee at this point. According to sources on the NFL side, Morrison has been removed from several team’s board after failing medicals.

In the end, it only takes one team to end this slide, but there’s no telling how many organizations are comfortable with where the medicals currently stand. Notre Dame fans should hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. There is a chance that a longer slide could be possible than most expected heading into Day Two of the event.

With the long term ramifications a bit up in the air, one thing is certain, a prospective team could end up getting a steal with Morrison whenever he does come off the board. He’s a very talented cover man, which is always valued in the modern NFL. Even if longevity is up in the air, the potential short term impact should still be excited for some.

The rarity of a hip injury at the cornerback position is an unknown to some, which makes navigating it a bit troublesome. It’s a position where hip mobility and fluidity is so important. There’s a world where Morrison is back to his old self physically, but another where that compromises one of the better parts of his game.
