Dylan Raiola, the Nebraska Cornhuskers' best chance at getting back to high-level relevance, just lost one of his weapons for the 2025 season.
Not long ago, Matt Rhule, the former Carolina Panthers head coach, told everyone that the Huskers would stop doing a spring football game because of the spring transfer portal window. Having that window open during spring allows a legal poaching process from other teams. And, it allows kids on your team to take the easy way out after seeing that they aren't where they want to be on the team, rather than just sticking it out and working their way up.
And while it hasn't been great for the Huskers, it seems like that isn't even why they are losing some of their players. This time it seems to be because of legal troubles. Well, Rhule claims it isn't, but that's certainly how it all comes off.
Huskers lose WR Hardley Gilmore
Hardley Gilmore IV, a wide receiver from Belle Glade, Florida, was a four-star recruit in the 2024 class, ranked No. 149 by Rivals. A track standout with a 50.52-second 400-meter dash, his speed drew offers from Kentucky, Penn State, and UCF. He reclassified to enroll early at Kentucky in 2024, skipping his final high school year.
At Kentucky, Gilmore broke his collarbone, missing the first five games of his freshman season. He played in the last seven, starting one, and had six catches for 153 yards and one touchdown, averaging 25.5 yards per catch. In December 2024, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Nebraska on January 1, 2025, joining former teammate Dane Key and coach Daikiel Shorts Jr.
Gilmore’s stint at Nebraska was short. After joining in January 2025 and practicing in spring, he was dismissed from the team on April 5, 2025, for undisclosed reasons, though coach Matt Rhule clarified it wasn’t criminal, even though he was previously charged with misdemeanor assault in Kentucky.
Gilmore has now re-entered the transfer portal without playing a game for Nebraska. With three years of eligibility left, his speed and catching ability make him a promising talent, but off-field issues and inconsistency could impact his next move.
But for now, the Huskers have to work on getting Raiola another weapon, or the next man in line has to step up.
Latest Dylan Raiola rumor could spell an ugly ending to his tenure at Nebraska
After entering the 2024 season with high hopes, the Nebraska Cornhuskers enter this week sitting 12th in the Big Ten with a 5-4 record. Recent one-score losses to UCLA and Ohio State have derailed the momentum Matt Rhule had after a strong start. The latest rumor going around is far more concerning, though. 5-star freshman […]
