Ohio State had a big decision to make two winters ago about the future of their quarterback position.

After Kyle McCord opted to leave and hit the portal, the Buckeyes had to find a quarterback that is able to lead a loaded roster. Ohio State not only needed a strong leader, but a player who fits the system as well. Kansas State transfer QB Will Howard was just that for the Buckeyes and the rest is history with the National Championship.

McCord had a solid year with the Orange but they weren’t a team that has the ability to compete to the level of making the College Football playoff. The Pennsylvania native and former Buckeye recently admitted how he felt about Ohio State winning it all on Jon Gruden’s “Gruden’s QB Showcase”.

“I was happy for them,” McCord stated. “It worked out for me going to Syracuse and obviously worked out for them. It’s a rare instance where both parties benefited.”

McCord threw for 4,779 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns. He was able to up his draft stock with a big year for the Orange offense. The 12 interceptions were a number that McCord would have liked to be lower, though he still aired the ball out a ton all year.

Despite being the starter for all of the 2023 season and losing just two games, McCord didn’t make it two seasons as the starter. McCord had 24 touchdown passes to six interceptions with the Buckeyes in 2023. Still, how the season ended with a poor performance against Michigan is what is most remembered.

The transfer worked out for McCord and both he and Howard will be drafted later this week to the NFL. There seems to be no bad feelings from either side and that’s nice to see in today’s era of college football.
