Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes have had a quiet time with the transfer portal so far this spring. Outside of being interested in multiple players in the trenches and some visits, the Buckeyes haven’t lost much or gained anything via the portal.
Ohio State will now lose a player in offense who once showed promise as a walk-on player, but his career ended up derailed with injuries in Columbus.
Ohio State walk-on RB TC Caffey enters the spring transfer portal
According to Pete Nakos of On3, Ohio State RB TC Caffey is opting to hit the transfer portal. Caffey spent three years with the Buckeyes and will have two years of eligibility thanks to a redshirt.
Caffey flashed his potential as a true freshman back in 2022 with a 49-yard touchdown against Toledo. Caffey had 10 rushes for 66 yards in his Ohio State career and they all came during his freshman season.
Heading into the 2024 season, there was a very real chance that Caffey was going to be the No. 3 running back behind TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. That possibility was knocked off course with a knee injury during summer workouts. It was the second major injury for Caffey at Ohio State, as the walk-on tore his ACL and missed all of the 2023 season.
Ohio State's running back room is filled for 2025 and there was no real path to getting on the field for Caffey. The Buckeyes will see James Peoples and CJ Donaldson as the top two options. Freshman Bo Jackson and second-year RB Sam Williams-Dixon will be behind them.
The portal closes on Friday and the Buckeyes have yet to have a major entry, so that is a win. Ohio State should soon receive its first commitment from the portal.
Caffey, a Hubbard, Ohio native will look to make an impact at a school where he can see the field. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound running back should land on his feet nicely at his next school as long as he can stay healthy.
