The Alabama Crimson Tide are undergoing major changes on offense, starting with the staff and trickling down to several starting players. New offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb must successfully revamp a unit that lost its starting quarterback, running back, and tight ends.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer has done his best to replenish the offensive firepower through two transfer portal windows.

On Wednesday, DeBoer landed tight end Jack Sammarco from West Virginia. He'll join Josh Cuevas, Danny Lewis Jr., Peter Knudson, and some younger bodies looking to make a name for themselves. The collective production from the unit is concerning still.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound redshirt freshman participated in all 13 games for the Mountaineers last season, mainly focusing on his blocking duties. Although he only recorded one reception for 13 yards, his impressive size and physical style make him a valuable addition to the Crimson Tide’s offense.

Sammarco adds versatility to Alabama’s tight end group, which faced depth issues during spring practice. He played a total of 203 snaps last season, with 80 out of his 95 offensive plays as an in-line tight end. His capability to engage opponents at the line of scrimmage and create opportunities for ball carriers aligns perfectly with Alabama’s run-oriented strategy.

As a former three-star recruit from Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Sammarco received All-State recognition after tallying 315 yards and five touchdowns on 27 receptions during his high school career. His blend of size, blocking skills, and potential as a pass-catcher makes him an excellent fit for Alabama’s offensive scheme.

There's still a lot unsettled with the Crimson Tide offense entering the spring practice window, but having a stud tight end locked into a role would be a big boost for a young quarterback. We'll see whether Cuevas or Sammarco can earn that TE1 spot and be equally valuable as a blocker and receiver.
