Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have been wobbled on the recruiting trail. In short order this week, they watched both five-star pass-rusher Richard Wesley announce a bizarre visit schedule and then later decommit from Oregon, then saw Alai Kalaniuvalu flip from Oregon to BYU for the second time.

Wesley's back and forth was enough to stagger the Ducks to tap out for the week ahead of a massive recruiting push over the next few weeks. But Kalaniuvalu's departure was especially painful.

Lanning watched the four-star offensive blocker commit to him in July 2024, then decommit for BYU in November. One month later, he opted to sign with Oregon during the early signing period.

Then, on Tuesday, BYU announced Kalaniuvalu as a signee.

The Utah native was one of only two offensive linemen to sign with Oregon in the 2025 class before bolting. The Under Armour All-American always planned on taking a two-year mission before attending school, so it's not a short-term loss for the program.

But Lanning put his neck out for the indecisive young man, and their 18-man 2025 class has lost some allure. Their 2026 class is especially concerning, and the Ducks might be punching above their weight class for some of these elite prospects.
