The Michigan Wolverines have their five star quarterback in Bryce Underwood. It's time for Sherrone Moore and his staff to start building out the offense around him in a way that looks sustainable.
Michigan has been building a bit of momentum, adding a couple tight ends for their 2026 recruiting class, but the wide receiver position is still a huge question mark. The Wolverines have been trying hard to add more receiver talent this year, offering around 50 receiver recruits in the 2026 class, but as official visits approach Michigan still doesn't have any high pedigree offensive pass catchers committed outside of Matt Ludwig at tight end.
However, there is one more shot at landing a truly elite playmaker where Michigan finds themselves firmly in the mix as his July 5th commitment date approaches.
Calvin Russell, Five Star WR Recruit
Calvin Russell has been considered a lock for Top 50 status among all recruits in the 2026 recruiting class for two years now. He's a 6'5" smooth route runner that moves with great fluidity, burst, and flexibility for his size. Russell is now up to more than 50 scholarship offers from all the top programs around the country, but as his commitment date nears he still has Michigan in the mix.
It may just be a "Top 8" spot for the Wolverines down the stretch, with many experts believing the Miami product is leaning towards one of the Florida schools, but that hasn't stopped Michigan here recently when they want to go all in on a prospect.
This might seem like "just any other recruitment", but it's not. Michigan has already missed out on Tristen Keys, Chris Henry Jr., Keisean Henderson, and a dozen other Top 300 recruits at the wide receiver position this recruiting cycle. They're running out of top talent options. Yes, Travis Johnson and Zion Robinson might be options too as Top 150 recruits, but shouldn't be considered anywhere near as important as Calvin Russell.
Michigan has already made things clear with their Bryce Underwood acquisition (among a few other high pedigree recruits) that when they want to go "get their guy" they can do it. Michigan is apparently still pushing to get Russell in on an official visit per multiple sources (EJ Holland of On3 most notably) this week, so we may learn more here soon.
If Michigan can get Russell in for an official visit, perhaps also getting the NIL and financial situation in a good enough spot Russell could surprisingly shift his focus away from the in-state schools here soon. If he doesn't, Michigan is going to be in a tough spot with their wide receivers beyond this year.
Donaven McCulley, the Indiana transfer might be an okay option for this fall at true "X" wide receiver, but Fredrick Moore and most others on the roster already certainly don't look like the fix there. It's been years since Michigan had a dominant X like Nico Collins, and if they're serious about putting together a strong offense around Bryce Underwood that needs to change.
Michigan desperately needs to win this battle for Russell. Otherwise the Wolverines receiving options might hold the team back in the very near future. Let's hope Sherrone Moore and his staff push hard to fix the obvious skill talent problem here soon.
