Brian Schottenheimer isn't just the new Dallas Cowboys head coach. He's the new offensive architect and play caller.

That means he will be judged in more ways than one. Everyone has a problem with play calling anytime something goes wrong. And considering he has Dak Prescott at quarterback along with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at wide receiver, he's got weapons.

The NFL world will surely expect a high volume of points and good efficiency. But how will Schottenheimer himself measure the success of the offense? The Cowboys head coach answered that question with a perfect one-word response.

"Wins," Schottenheimer told reporters at the start of the Cowboys' mandatory minicamp

Listen, you can look at this as a cheesy coach comment but it's still an important message from the Cowboys' new leader. A lot is made about pass-happy offenses, EPA per play, play action, etc. All of that matters. But what will matter in Dallas is winning games. Period.

Now granted, a good one-liner won't get the Cowboys any offensive success. How Schottenheimer calls the plays and how the coaching staff builds the offense will. The team has a proven quarterback under center and one of the best group of weapons the roster has seen in many years.

There are question marks on offense, for sure. Who will be RB1? Will pass protection hold up? But skill position players and QB play should be a strength of this team.

Prescott and Co. won 12 games in three consecutive seasons prior to 2024 and while that mark might be too high to achieve this season, there's evidence of Dak being able to make the Cowboys contenders. However, Schottenheimer knows his offense will need to be better than Mike McCarthy's in January, an area where the team struggled during that stretch.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Cowboys must first worry about winning enough to get into the playoffs. Wins is the only thing that matters to Schotty.
