Latest notes on the final 5 teams holding mandatory minicamps
Mandatory minicamps are underway for the final five teams that did not hold theirs last week. Some wrapped up yesterday, and others will be completed Thursday. Let’s take a look at the top storylines from all five camps before we head into the lull of the offseason.
Kansas City Chiefs
- As they shake off their shellacking in Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs are looking to remain the top team in the AFC. Future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce is back for at least one more ride, as he revealed that he didn’t really consider retirement as much as it was perceived.
- The Chiefs need either rookie Josh Simmons or veteran Jaylon Moore to step up and solidify the left tackle position, which was their glaring weakness last season. They also need their wide receiver corps to stay healthy after being ravaged by injuries in 2024. If those two things happen, K.C. won’t be falling off the map anytime soon.
- Defensively, K.C. is returning 10 of its 11 defensive starters from 2024, so expect the unit to remain strong in 2025.
Baltimore Ravens
- Having fallen short of reaching the Super Bowl in each of the past several postseasons, the Ravens have beefed up their roster in a big way to try to get over the hump in 2025. They signed recently released cornerback Jaire Alexander on Wednesday, adding him to an already stacked secondary.
- Keep an eye on second-year safety Sanoussi Kane, who has generated some buzz throughout OTAs.
- Baltimore also added veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins during free agency to complement Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.
- Quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Derrick Henry will look to replicate their unprecedented rushing success from last season, when they combined for 2,836 yards.
Los Angeles Rams
- After a bit of offseason uncertainty with Matthew Stafford, the Rams gave him a new contract and will try to make at least one more run back to the Super Bowl with him as their QB. They also made two big signings on each side of the ball in WR Davante Adams and defensive tackle Poona Ford.
- RB Kyren Williams is looking for a contract extension as he enters the final year of his rookie deal, but all has remained quiet on that front.
- Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Jared Verse could be even better in Year 2, and L.A. is remaining vigilant on a potential trade for CB Jalen Ramsey.
- The Rams came closer than anyone at beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the postseason last year, getting edged out in the divisional round 28-22.
Seattle Seahawks
- There may not be another team in the NFL that will sport a new look in 2025 as much as Seattle will. Out are longtime stars such as QB Geno Smith and WRs DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. In are QB Sam Darnold, WR Cooper Kupp, guard Grey Zabel, and edge rusher Demarcus Lawrence. The Seahawks’ defense was solid in 2024, so the addition of Lawrence could put the unit in the upper echelon of the league.
- Seattle got younger and cheaper switching out Smith for Darnold, and there shouldn’t be much of a dip production-wise, if any. Banking on the often injured Kupp could be risky, but the upside if he stays healthy could be huge.
- Watch for rookie TE Elijah Arroyo to potentially make an immediate impact and eventually overtake current starter Noah Fant.
New York Giants
- With their 2025 first-round draft selection of outside linebacker Abdul Carter, the Giants have built what could be one of the most intimidating front sevens in the NFL. They also improved their secondary by adding safety Javon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo in free agency.
- The big question for New York is whether its offense is good enough to help take the team to the next level. Russell Wilson, who appears to be entrenched as the starting QB for now, is on his last legs. Rookie Jaxson Dart will be breathing down his neck, and it feel inevitable that he’ll take over before the end of the season. The Giants also need another playmaker behind WR Malik Nabers to step up.
