One day after the Houston Texans cut Shaq Mason and traded Laremy Tunsil, the franchise traded 2022 first-round pick Kenyon Green. The Texans have now moved on from three of their five leading snap-getters along the offensive line.
While Green was quite bad since being acquired and Mason had seen better days, former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud still can't be happy. The Texans' star was one of the best players in the NFL as a rookie but took a big step back in 2024.
Some of that was due to having a struggling offensive coordinator, an inconsistent offensive line, and an injury-stricken receiving corps.
Green was one of the worst-graded blockers in the NFL, so this isn't a loss of a good talent. Granted, going to Philadelphia to work with expert offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland could completely change his career. But it wasn't working with Houston.
The concern for Stroud now is finding continuity while replacing at least three starters. 2024 second-rounder Blake Fisher will theoretically slide in for Tunsil, while 2023 second-rounder Juice Scruggs' presence will move Tytus Howard back to right tackle.
Jarrett Patterson may be the plan at center, but the left guard-center combination is a noteworthy concern now. After trading Green, the Texans did add veteran left guard Laken Tomlinson after a disappointing season in Seattle.
New offensive coordinator Nick Caley will have Christian Kirk to integrate into the offense, plus he could have Stefon Diggs back in the fold if he agrees to a team-friendly deal. As you can imagine, though, the Texans' cap mismanagement has forced their hand to lose talent around Stroud.
