Previous NFL trade gives Tennessee Titans the perfect draft day blueprint to address key needs and win the 2025 offseason
The blueprint for a perfect Titans draft day trade.
NASHVILLE – Despite having the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans are lacking the necessary draft assets to address all of the team's biggest needs.
If we are to operate under the assumption that Tennessee plans on drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, that will leave them with just one other selection in the Top 100 (No. 35) and a need for an impact player at a minimum of two positions – wide receiver and edge rusher.
With a "draft and develop" approach to roster building, the Titans front office definitely feels some pressure to get more draft picks this year. But trading down from first overall could mean going into the season with a quarterback room of Brandon Allen and Will Levis…Good luck selling that to the fanbase and ownership.
So, what's the solution for GM Mike Borgonzi and the Titans? Tennessee should look at recent NFL history and the precedent set by the Arizona Cardinals in last year's draft. It provides a blue print for how the Titans can tie a perfect bow on their offseason transactions and address every need
Cardinals 2024 draft trade
The answer to getting more draft assets while still drafting a quarterback with the No.1. overall pick is to move down from No. 35 in the second round. Last year, the Cardinals traded that same pick and got an intriguing return that would be perfect for the Titans.
The Cardinals traded picks 35 and 186 to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for picks 43 and 79 in the 2024 NFL Draft. Arizona used No. 43 on CB Max Melton and traded back three spots from 79 to 82 in a deal with the Colts before finally selecting TE Tip Reiman.
The Titans can cash in
Let's imagine a similar return for Tennessee this year. In a world where the Titans move back with the 49ers, they could land Nos. 43 and 78. Dallas could offer Nos. 44 and 76. The idea would be to find a team that has a player circled at the beginning of Day 2 and leverage the 35th pick with a late-round selection to get two picks in the Top 100. That's not limited to San Francisco or Dallas. There are a number of teams who have the draft picks to be a match.
A well executed deal of this nature could allow Tennessee to come away with an impactful edge rusher and wide receiver on Day 2 of the draft.
Maybe you move back and are still able to get Princely Umanmielen in the second round and because you picked up a third-round selection, a wide receiver like Jack Bech, Jaylin Noel, Jalen Royals, or Isaiah Bond is still on the table.
Maybe it's wide receiver in the second round after a trade down. Tre Harris/Elic Ayomanor at 43, for example. Then in Round 3 you cash in on the deep pool of edge rushers in this draft class and grab Kyle Kennard or Josaiah Stewart.
It's all hypothetical, but I think this is the path to addressing both roster needs with high-upside, young talent. That's exactly what the Titans should be setting out to do as the new regime tries to reset and build a more sustainable core.
